End of Marathon training week 13

This week had a long run and race so it was different than the usual repetitive running in the neighbourhood.

Did 3 runs. A 15k and a 5k in order to rest and be ready for the Spetses Mini Marathon which is held annually on the island of Spetses.

This was the 3rd year in a row that the 2 day event took place and it was very well organised, although a few improvements need to be made. The run should start earlier than 9:30, have a few more first aid guys available, just in case, and depending on the weather sponges to cool down for the runners.

Saturday was swimming day. 2 events, a 5k crossing and a one way swim of 2.5k. In the afternoon kid’s races for all ages. Great fun!

Today, Sunday was running day. A 5k run and a 25k round the island. Much harder than I originally though. Lots of steep uphills with 30c temps and really sunny skies made the run more demanding. Did not know the route so I run fast in the first 10k thinking that the uphills would be over by the 12th k but I was wrong. It’s about 20k of ups and downs and after a point neither is easy! This made the last 3 or 4k even harder.

Overall a very well set up event and looking forward to participating again.

Managed to complete the race in 2:19 (118 out of 541). Four minutes slower than planned but 15sec faster  than my planned marathon pace. But probably the best part was the swim after!
